The Little Mermaid was originally released on my 12th birthday. While as an ordinary pre-teen I may not have paid that much attention to animated movies, my little sister was born that year, right at the dawn of the new Disney princess era. We owned the movies on VHS, but my most predominant memories included listening to the soundtracks on cassette tapes in my mother’s wood paneled station wagon, being shuffled around between hockey rinks and soccer fields.

Fast forward a few decades, and having only one child, who happens to be a boy, Disney Princesses aren’t exactly on his movie agenda, but his friends at school and daycare have certainly educated him. He is completely intrigued by Ariel and while he refuses to watch the movie because he’s afraid of Ursula, he has had lots of questions about “Ariel the Wer-maid.”

What stands out to me from Disney movies released in the late 80’s and 90’s was not only the ability to tell a heart warming love story, but the music. Classical scores, catchy tunes. So, while Gavin’s not interested in watching the movies per se, because scary lions, sea witches and beasts aren’t his favorite, listening to the music together allows me to reminisce but provides him with an entirely different experience.

The latest in the Disney Legacy Collection is the music from The Little Mermaid. The double cd features the original music from the movie, as well as a second cd that features never before released music. Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid
