Disclosure: I received samples of Chef M.J. Brando grilled cheese sandwiches to facilitate this review. Any opinions are my own.

I am not a cook by any stretch of the imagination, but aside from buying frozen fruits for smoothies and some bags of vegetables, we generally aren’t “frozen food people.” When I go food shopping I frequently skip the frozen food area altogether.

However, I am a working mother of an almost 4-year-old, so chicken nuggets, english muffin pizzas, macaroni & cheese, sunbutter & jelly sandwiches and grilled cheese are certainly consistently part of our menu plan, though I generally can make them fairly quickly, as long as I have the ingredients handy in the refrigerator.

When I received a pitch from MJ Brando about reviewing their frozen grilled cheese sandwiches that are cooked in the microwave, I was honestly a little skeptical. If there was ever something I could cook in 5 minutes, it would be a grilled cheese sandwich. Since I’m hardly in the frozen food section anyway, a frozen grilled cheese sandwich certainly wouldn’t be something I’d generally be searching for on a shopping trip.

However, we received a few boxes to try, and contrary to what I honestly expected, they were pretty yummy. They arrive 2 sandwiches to a box, each individually wrapped. After the outer plastic wrap is removed, the sandwich and its crisper sleeve are placed in the microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds. After resting for another 30 seconds, the sandwich is ready to eat. I took apart the sandwich prior to microwaving it, and there were 2 real slices of yellow American cheese inside. As advertised the outer bread was pretty crunchy after it’s been cooked. It does get really hot in the middle though and I’d  recommend taking it apart to let some of the steam out before you give it to your children to cool it off a bit. Gavin had one for dinner and apparently liked it so much, that the next day when I asked him what he wanted for lunch without giving him any choices or parameters, he asked for “another one of those grilled cheese sandwiches.”

There are instances where as parents we need to give the kids something and though these sandwiches aren’t hugely nutritional (18 g fat, 340 calories, 13g protein in 1 sandwich), my son liked them enough to ask for another one the next day. In a pinch it certainly satisfied our families on-the-go lifestyle needs. On the days I’m running late for school in the morning, and haven’t been great about planning my meals ahead of time, we have one last sandwich that’s been staring at me when I reach in for our lunch ice packs. So if Gavin doesn’t get to it first, I’m pretty sure one of them will end up in my lunch on one of those days where I need a little extra salt or some good old comfort food.

I’m giving away 3 packages of MJ Brando grilled cheese sandwiches. One lucky winner will get a chance to the American, Swiss and Cheddar flavored sandwiches. Enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below.a Rafflecopter giveaway
