Scratchy Clothing Can Be A Big Sensory Issue for Children

Keri Wilmot from ToyQueen.com at Hanna AnderssonIf you have a child or are sensitive yourself, you know that scratchy clothing can be a big sensory issue for children. You know — the tags that people are adamant about removing, the way kids or adults rub clothing textures through their fingertips in stores before purchasing looking for something that “feels just right.” Or, the way a child can put on an article of clothing that “looks” like it will feel good, then rip it off seconds later asking for their favorite article of soft, comfy clothing?

Whether this sensory issue is a standalone issue or part of a bigger sensory processing disorder that also impacts children with diagnoses on the Autism and ADD spectrum, I’ve known many parents who will buy anything to minimize the early morning before-school clothing chaos.

I recently worked with Hanna Andersson clothing stores on the promotion of a new store opening in Lynnfield, MA. I got a chance to meet the clothing designers and knew I needed to share some of their unique history to make sure that if you are the parent of a child who has tactile sensory issues that you find a Hanna Andersson location and bring your kids to experience their clothing for yourself.

Here is the Hanna Andersson mission statement, “In our world of so-fast, we love making clothes that let them be little. Let’s give kidsfreedom to explore, play, get dirty and know that everything is comfy and good, without worries about clothes or struggles with feeling squished or scratchy.”

Hanna Andersson clothing and pajamas include super-soft cotton fabric and seams. 60% of their clothing is tested for over 100 harmful substances, and given their Swedish roots adhere to very strict European standards.

At the event, the designers asked me how I first knew about the brand. My response, ” a pair of pajamas.” Their question, “Did you buy the pajamas or receive them as a hand-me-down.” I sheepishly admitted that they had been passed down from a friend. “Oh, you got a Hanna-Me-Down-Able!” Turns out it’s pretty common, the fabrics are made so well the company understands and hopes that the clothes can be passed on from one child to another.

I received a gift card and we stocked up on a few pairs of #HannaJams for Gavin. Make sure to check out their sizing charts, as they use European sizing, but once you are used to it, it’s not difficult. Staff are really helpful in this area. Here’s another one of my favorite customer service points with Hanna Andersson, if you buy their clothing a year ahead to save money and when the time comes if it doesn’t fit the child, you can always return it to the store with a receipt and exchange the item.

Lastly, Hanna Andersson now has Star Wars and Disney brand super-soft pajamas and underwear. Finally a way for your kids to wear their favorite characters in a quality piece of clothing! For your kids who become their own brand ambassadors for their soft clothing who may  also be particular about bedding, the company also sells duvet covers, sheets and nursery bedding.
